About the Polybius Square, does it use a key or is it just the alphabet? I fear that I am overthinking the steps a little, so this could help me narrow down the options. Thank you!

Keep an eye on the Case Files in the next day or so to find out … Harry

With 8B, once you have sorted out the numbers, you can arrange the numbers in pairs and rather than hill climb a Polybius, actually solve it as a substitution cipher; it can help to convert the number pairs to letters. Obviously, this trick is to have the numbers correct first! For this maybe it might help to Google Polybius square and have a look at the different methods mentioned. Maybe one of those might help??

… I forgot to add, to save unnecessary effort, check the Index Of Coincidence before you run the Polybius or Substitution decrypt. (What this is and how to do it is in the training manuals, although if you probably know it by now with all the Vigenere challenges.) If it’s not close to normal, there’s no point trying the decrypt, you haven’t yet manipulated the numbers correctly. Good luck!

Do you really need a key to solve a Polybius square? My program assigns a letter of the alphabet to each pair of digits, then solves the result as a substitution.
